Job Description

CNC Machinist

Job Summary

The CNC Machinist is responsible for producing high-quality machined components by operating CNC equipment according to work orders, engineering drawings, and production specifications. This position ensures parts are manufactured accurately, equipment is operated safely, and all quality and documentation requirements are met. The CNC Machinist reports directly to the Machine Shop Supervisor and does not supervise other employees.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Report to the Machine Shop Supervisor to receive daily work assignments and production instructions.
  • Follow all safety procedures, workplace policies, and quality standards.
  • Perform routine pre-operation inspections and basic machine maintenance before beginning production.
  • Verify that the correct materials have been issued for each work order before machining.
  • Inspect precision measuring equipment to ensure calibration is current and report any damaged or out-of-calibration tools.
  • Confirm the accuracy of measuring instruments, including dial calipers and micrometers, before each shift.
  • Monitor machine operation throughout the machining cycle and remain attentive while equipment is running.
  • Record machine settings, offsets, and production information before loading new programs.
  • Verify tooling, holders, boring bars, and other machine components against setup documentation before production begins.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and legible production records.
  • Obtain supervisor approval before making program changes and ensure required first article inspections are completed before continuing production.
  • Immediately report machine malfunctions or operational issues to the Machine Shop Supervisor.
  • Carefully remove finished components to prevent damage during handling.
  • Properly identify completed work in accordance with established shop procedures.
  • Report dimensional discrepancies, material defects, or quality concerns to Quality Control or management immediately.
  • Complete end-of-shift housekeeping by cleaning machines, removing chips and debris, organizing the work area, and preparing equipment for the next shift.
  • Complete and sign all required work orders, routing documents, inspection records, and production paperwork.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • One to two years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written work instructions and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and production documentation.
  • Working knowledge of CNC machinery and precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to inspect finished parts, verify dimensions, and accurately document quality checks.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Sufficient visual acuity to safely perform machining and inspection tasks.
  • Ability to work in office, warehouse, production, or outdoor environments as needed.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Physical Requirements

This position regularly requires the ability to:

  • Lift, push, pull, and carry materials weighing up to 75 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Perform material handling at both waist and shoulder height throughout the workday.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and occasionally sit for extended periods.
  • Operate CNC machines, hand tools, and precision measuring equipment safely.
  • Occasionally climb stairs while accessing work areas.
  • Maintain visual focus for reading measurements, inspecting finished components, and monitoring machine operation.
  • Work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery, noise, metal chips, temperature fluctuations, and other industrial conditions.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks throughout the shift while maintaining a high level of accuracy, safety, and productivity.
