Job Description

CNC Machine Operator

Job Summary

The CNC Machine Operator is responsible for producing high-quality machined components by safely operating CNC equipment and following production specifications. This position ensures parts meet quality standards, maintains accurate production documentation, and supports efficient manufacturing operations. The CNC Machine Operator reports directly to the Machine Shop Supervisor and has no supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Review work orders, setup instructions, and production requirements before beginning each job.
  • Follow all workplace safety policies, operating procedures, and quality standards.
  • Perform routine pre-operation inspections and basic machine maintenance before starting production.
  • Verify that the correct material has been issued for each work order prior to machining.
  • Confirm that precision measuring equipment is properly calibrated before use and report any damaged or out-of-calibration tools.
  • Verify measuring instruments, including dial calipers and micrometers, to ensure accuracy.
  • Monitor machine operation throughout the machining cycle and remain at the machine while it is in operation.
  • Record machine settings, offsets, and other required production information before changing programs.
  • Verify tooling, holders, inserts, and boring bars against setup documentation before machining begins.
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and legible production records.
  • Obtain supervisor approval for program modifications and ensure first article inspections are completed before production resumes.
  • Immediately report equipment malfunctions or operational concerns to the Machine Shop Supervisor.
  • Carefully remove finished parts to prevent damage and preserve product quality.
  • Clearly identify completed work according to established production procedures.
  • Report dimensional discrepancies, material concerns, or quality issues to Quality Control or management.
  • Clean machines, remove metal shavings, organize the work area, and complete end-of-shift housekeeping responsibilities.
  • Complete all required production documentation, work orders, inspection records, and routing paperwork accurately.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation as required by operational needs.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • One to two years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of CNC lathes, mills, or similar machining equipment.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and indicators.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, work orders, and machining instructions.
  • Strong understanding of quality control procedures and dimensional verification.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented environment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Physical Requirements

This position regularly requires the ability to:

  • Lift, push, pull, and carry materials weighing up to 75 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Handle materials at both waist and shoulder height throughout the workday.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and occasionally sit for extended periods.
  • Operate CNC machinery, hand tools, lifting equipment, and precision measuring devices safely.
  • Climb stairs occasionally when accessing production areas.
  • Maintain visual acuity to inspect machined parts, monitor machine operation, and read detailed measurements.
  • Work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery, noise, metal shavings, temperature changes, and other shop conditions.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks throughout the shift while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to safety.
