The Industrial Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of machine tools to fabricate, modify, or repair precision parts and equipment used in heavy industrial environments. This role requires strong technical skills, mechanical aptitude, and hands-on experience with metalworking and machinery operation. The machinist ensures that components meet exact specifications while maintaining safety and quality standards.
Set up and operate manual and CNC machines including lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses.
Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine machining requirements.
Measure and inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, and other precision instruments to ensure conformance to specifications.
Machine and fabricate custom parts for industrial equipment, tools, or structural systems.
Repair worn or damaged components by machining replacement parts or reworking existing ones.
Maintain, troubleshoot, and perform routine service on machine shop equipment.
Collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams to support production needs and reduce equipment downtime.
Safely handle and operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and hand tools as needed.
Maintain a clean and organized work area; follow safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE.
Document work performed, material usage, and any deviations from original specs.
High school diploma or GED required; technical training or apprenticeship preferred.
4+ years of experience as an industrial or maintenance machinist (heavy industry preferred).
Proficiency with manual machines (lathe, mill, surface grinder); CNC experience is a plus.
Strong understanding of tolerances, metal types, and machining techniques.
Ability to read blueprints, mechanical drawings, and use measuring tools with accuracy.
Basic welding or fabrication experience (a plus but not required).
Familiarity with industrial safety standards (OSHA, ANSI, etc.).
Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for long periods.
Industrial or plant setting with exposure to machinery, metal shavings, oils, and noise.
May require overtime, shift work, or weekend hours depending on operational needs.
Use of PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, and steel-toed boots.
